Take it from the desk of a former Contracting Officer—working with the federal government can be hard. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are reasons for this. When using taxpayer dollars to fund every decision, precautions remain necessary to ensure that these dollars are well utilized. However, the irony is, these processes often result in a less efficient and less cost-effective solution.

Is the greatest barrier to competition the competitive process? And could sole-source authority be the solution?

Since 1982, the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs have served as the nation’s largest sources of early stage/high-risk funding for start-ups and small businesses. There are eleven Federal Agencies that participate annually in the SBIR program and five participating in the STTR program granting awards for Phase I and Phase II.

Since their inception, these highly competitive programs have awarded well over $53 Billion to innovative small business concerns.

At the forefront of every American’s mind right now, whether they own a business or not, is the highest inflation rates in 40 years that we are currently facing. In May, we saw a surge in prices, and the decrease in this surge is expected to be slow, as many economists predict inflation will hold steady at about 8.3% for an extended period of time. According to the Labor Department, the consumer price index increased 8.6% annually, which is the largest rise since December 1981.
